About Oyster Boy
Address: 872 Queen St W, Toronto, ON, M6J 1G3
Oyster Boy is one of the premiere oyster restaurants in Toronto. Located in the Queen Street West neighborhood, Oyster Boy eats, lives, and breathe oysters. The owners are avid oyster owners themselves, who loved their hard shells, their smooth taste and that the un-class-conscious way they make themselves at home in a rowdy pub or a black tie affair.
Canada is vast and goes from sea-to-sea, meaning that we are also lucky to have access to variety of oysters from both the east coast and west coast. At Oyster Boy, the oysters are mainly sourced from Prince Edward Island on the east coast or British Columbia on the west coast, depending on the season. Check out their website for the different varieties that they serve, including the Premium Malpeques, Beach Angel, and Kusshi!
What is Shuck U
Oyster Boy Shuck U: Held on weekend, check website for schedule. $55 per participant, includes 18 oysters, shucker, and t-shirt.
Besides offering top quality oysters to Torontonians, Oyster Boy also aims to educate everyone about the wonderful oysters. The most important education is definitely the proper way to shuck oyster so you can shuck quickly and don’t hurt yourself with the pointy knives.
Shuck U programs are two hours long on weekend from 12pm – 2pm. Professor Adam Colquhoun will lecture on everything you want to know about oysters, including how they are grown, how they breed, life cycle of an oyster, and seasonal variations. The professor is very knowledgeable and share lots of valuable insights on the life and businesses of the East Coast oyster growers.
After learning about the wonderful oysters, then all participants will have a hands-on experience to shuck oysters! 18 fresh seasonal oysters are included with the program fee so you can have plenty of hands-on practices. Adam and his assistant are very experienced and will guide you to shuck an oyster effortlessly and beautifully. There is no better feeling than shucking an oyster and then immediately enjoying their smooth fresh taste.
We learned that the key to shuck an oyster is to place it at an angle. This will make sure that you will not hurt yourself while shucking. Then, put the shucker at the base of the hinge, and then use your body force to apply pressure, twist the knife a little bit, and prise the hinge open. If you get the technique right, you don’t need to use too much force and the process is fairly effortless and efficient.
Overall we enjoyed Shuck U from Oyster Boy very much and learned a lot about oysters! We have become master shucker and the oysters we had were absolutely delicious. We highly recommended this program for all foodies in Toronto!
