Even though lobsters and seafood tastes absolutely delicious, they are usually very expensive. Worst of all, they are weighted by pounds and you won’t know how much your meal cost until the end of the meal. lbs. lbs. is an innovative dining concept created to shake up the restaurant scene in Toronto’s downtown core. lbs. pronounced ‘pounds’ founded by restaurateurs Jonathan Gonsenhauser and Will Tomlinson.
To challenge the industry convention of pricing lobster items very high, Gonsenhauser and Tomlinson founded lbs. with a rebellious spirit and set out to provide the freshest lobster at an affordable price in an upscale restaurant setting.
Restaurant Setting
lbs. is located in the heart of the financial district in downtown Toronto. With 140 seats, the restaurant has simple yet elegant setting, and very spacious and comfortable sittings. There is also a large bar that is perfect for happy hours after work or after a Raptors / Leafs / Jays game!
Beside formal sit down lunch and dinner, lbs. also has a take-out window that is connected to the PATH, facing the atrium in the Scotia Plaza. In the morning the window serves Sam James coffee, and full menu lunch and dinner. The lobster roll and ice cream sandwich are very popular during lunch hours!
Menu
lbs. menu has a wide selection of raw seafood, snacks (appetizers), soil (for the non-seafood eaters), shellfish, seasonal, and sea items. Being environmentally conscious, there are menu items that are recommended by Vancouver Aquarium as ocean-friendly.
Snacks
Fried Smelts ($10)
The smelts are locally sourced from Toronto and they were deliciously fried and breaded. Goes perfectly well with the lemon dipping sauce!
Crudo ($11)
Crudo is raw in Italian. For this dish, lbs. has a mixture of octopus, preserved lemon, turmeric. The octopus were very chewy and fresh, and excellently complimented with the sour taste of lemon and turmeric.
Main Course
PEI mussels ($18)
There is one pounds of PEI mussels, cooked with beer, ancho, butter, cilantro, and sourdough. The sauce brings out the freshness and flavour of the mussels. Make sure to dip the bread into the delicious sauce!
Black cod ($36)
The black cod is sided by butter poached new potatoes, cilantro broth, shaved brussels sprouts, radish and red onion salsa. We must say this is our favourite dish of the night, the cod were perfected cooked with wonderful texture and tenderness. The potato and broth are well mixed too and brings out the freshness of the cod.
1.25lbs Nova Scotia lobster ($27)
Lobsters are the signature dish of lbs., with a full 1.25lbs Nova Scotia lobsters sided with drawn butter, fennel, and apple slaw. Eating lobsters are usually a struggle with the hard shell, but lbs. have done all the hard work and pre-cracked all the hard shell before serving the lobsters. You don’t really need the cute bibs offered, you can just easily slide the lobster meats out of the shell and enjoy their fresh and delicious tastes!
Bonus: Caramel Bread Pudding
After enjoying the seafood fest, make sure to save room for the caramel bread pudding as it is probably the best caramel sauce we have tasted. The bread pudding are wonderfully baked and they will melt in your mouth.
Overall we enjoyed lbs. very much and it will probably be our go-to seafood restaurant in Toronto!
